A sampling-based approach for probabilistic design with random fields

چکیده
An original technique to incorporate random fields non-intrusively in probabilistic design is presented. The approach is based on the extraction of the main features of a random field using a limited number of experimental observations (snapshots). An approximation of the random field is obtained using proper orthogonal decomposition (POD). For a given failure criterion, an explicit limit state function (LSF) in terms of the coefficients of the POD expansion is obtained using a support vector machine (SVM). An adaptive sampling technique is used to generate samples and update the approximated LSF. The coefficients of the orthogonal decomposition are considered as random variables with distributions determined from the snapshots. Based on these distributions and the explicit LSF, the approach allows for an efficient assessment of the probabilities of failure. In addition, the construction of explicit LSF has the advantage of handling discontinuous responses. Two test-problems are used to demonstrate the proposed methodology used for the calculation of probabilities of failure. The first example involves the linear buckling of an arch structure for which the thickness is a random field. The second problem concerns the impact of a tube on a rigid wall. The planarity of the walls of the tube is considered as a random field. 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A Design Methodology for Reliable MRF-Based Logic Gates
Probabilistic-based methods have been used for designing noise tolerant circuits recently. In these methods, however, there is not any reliability mechanism that is essential for nanometer digital VLSI circuits. In this paper, we propose a novel method for designing reliable probabilistic-based logic gates. The advantage of the proposed method in comparison with previous probabilistic-based met...
متن کاملCalibration of Load and Resistance Factors for Reinforced Concrete
Current approach for designing of reinforced concrete members is based on the load and resistance factor. However the load and resistance parameters are random variables, the constant values have been designated for them in the designing procedure. Assuming these factors as the constants, will be led to the unsafe and uneconomical designs. Safe designing of structures requires appropriate recog...
متن کاملTopology-Guided Sampling of Nonhomogeneous Random Fields
Topological measurements are increasingly being accepted as an important tool for quantifying complex structures. In many applications these structures can be expressed as nodal domains of real-valued functions and are obtained only through experimental observation or numerical simulations. In both cases, the data on which the topological measurements are based are derived via some form of fini...

Robust control design of vehicles addresses the effect of uncertainties on the vehicle’s performance. In present study, the robust optimal multi-objective controller design on a non-linear full vehicle dynamic model with 8-degrees of freedom having parameter with probabilistic uncertainty considering two simultaneous conflicting objective functions has been made to prevent the rollover. The obj...
متن کاملStochastic Digital Circuits for Probabilistic Inference
We introduce combinational stochastic logic, an abstraction that generalizes deterministic digital circuit design (based on Boolean logic gates) to the probabilistic setting. We show how this logic can be combined with techniques from contemporary digital design to generate stateless and stateful circuits for exact and approximate sampling from a range of probability distributions. We focus on ...
